HP introduced its first "ultrabook"

Hewlett-Packard Company has announced Folio13 - the first computer in the line of HP, belonging to the class "ultrabook" or ultrathin laptops. It is stated in a press release.
Like the older model of MacBook Air, which became the role model for "ultrabook", Folio13 has a 13.3-inch screen. Resolution is 1366 by 768 pixels. "Ultrabook" enclosed in an aluminum case, backlit keyboard. With a thickness of 18 millimeters computer weighs just under a half kilograms.

The choice will be available in two versions Folio13 - the 1.4-gigahertz processor, Intel Core i3 or 1.6-gigahertz Intel Core i5, clarifies blog The Verge. "Ultrabook" has four gigabytes of RAM and comes with SSD-drive with 128 gigabytes.

A more modest than the MacBook Air, Folio13 "stuffing" has numerous ports including connectors Ethernet, HDMI, USB and memory card slot. HP claims that the maximum battery life in "ultrabook" is nine hours ("MacBook" - seven hours).

It is emphasized that Folio13 aimed at business users. At will of customer notebook can be equipped with a chip TMP (Trusted Platform Module) for data protection. The computer is running Windows 7 operating system.

On sale in the U.S. Folio13 will arrive on December 7. The price of the device will start at 899.99 dollars. Verzo Kinzo smartphone with a modified Android is available for order

Apple has warned owners of iPod Nano first generation that these gadgets can be dangerous to health.

In official statement Apple says that there is a possibility of overheating the battery and it is not safe. Users are advised to immediately stop using the players and get a replacement . Apple underlines that we are talking about players that were sold in September 2005 - December 2006.

It is worth noting that three years ago, Apple released the exact same warning. New statement is explained by the fact that over time the danger of overheating only increases.

Order for Amazon Kindle Fire production grew to 5 million units

A Sexy New Notebook From Sony

Sony's big news announcement at CES involves a very tiny package. But don't call it a netbook. Sony spokesfolk were adamant that--even though the newcomer packs an Intel Atom processor and 2GB of RAM--this superslim P-series computer is a lifestyle machine.

The distinction sort of makes sense, too: At the $899 starting price that Sony expects the unit to command when it ships in February, it had better do more than be small.

Small it's got down: Weighing 1.4 pounds and measuring about 1 inch thick, the pint-size PC can slide snuggly into a coat pocket or purse. But inside the P series are such impressive components as a 60GB hard-disk drive (you can invest in a 64GB or 128GB solid-state drive if you prefer), a battery that promises 4 hours battery life (8 hours with the optional battery upgrade), 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Qualcomm's Gobi chip set for wireless broadband. That's on top of what you'll find inside any computer that sports an Atom processor: two USB ports, a headphone jack, a display/LAN adapter connection, a Webcam with built-in mic, an SD Card slot, and a Memory Stick card slot. Technically, I think that outdoes the MacBook Air. And all of this goodness sits inside a slim, screwless case that will be available in several colors.

Of course, the screen and the keyboard are crucial components. The device was built around a QWERTY keyboard that is 88 percent the size of a standard desktop keyboard, and we won't know whether it is comfortable and usable until we conduct some fingers-on testing. Sony laptops typically have sweet screens, so I'm anxious to see this backlit LED up close and personal--especially since the P-series notebooks have a resolution of 1600 by 768 pixels, a 16:7 aspect ratio. Sony reps say that the screen will allow users to view two full Web pages side-by-side, but I'll have to see it before I believe it.

In another bit of derring-do, Sony plans to have this machine run Windows Vista Basic rather than Windows XP--the usual operating system of choice for thin-and-light-on-horsepower laptops. This design decision could prove to be a performance stumbling block for Sony's wünderdevice, but the proof will be in the PC World Test Center's lab results, which are still to come. At least Sony has taken a cue from the HP Voodoo Envy 133 and from Asus's laptops by incorporating a quick-launching (20-second startup) Linux shell. The Instant Mode boots into a cross-media bar interface that should be familiar to anyone who has ever used a PlayStation 3.

Until I actually use this thing (I may try to swipe one during the show), I won't know whether a typical ham-fisted male adult will find the P-series machine even remotely usable. I sure hope that it's up to the challenge posed by my mitts, though, because it's a tempting box of lifestyle.

IBM Shopping Buddy

IBM has a new product in a few select grocery stores called Shopping Buddy. Basically Shopping Buddy is a Wi-Fi enabled, GPS equipped laptop.

That’s right grandmothers and housewives everywhere can get their technical shop on. The item is slated to save you time. How does it do that?

Let’s say you need to know where the peanut butter is. You type in peanut butter and up pops a map. The GPS shows your position and how to get to the exact location of peanut butter in the store. The sounds pretty cool seeing as how I always run up and down the isles looking for that last thing we forgot to get as my wife is checking out in line. This would save me from knocking over small children and display items in my mad dash to find the stupid chopped almonds.

Another thing the Shopping Buddy does is it tells you what you have bought on that isle in the past. So while you’re buying crackers on isle 4 up pops a little note reminding of that time you bought those double stuff Oreos and then went home and ate them all at once. Damn Shopping Buddy that was 3 months ago, let it go, let it go.

One more feature that the Shopping Buddy offers is a recipe suggestion tool. You pick up an item and scan it and up pops some recipes. If you like them you can email them to your house. I mentioned scanning the items. You do this so you don’t have to go through the hassle of having the checkout person scan them at the register.

I’m not sure how much time Shopping Buddy will save you, but it does seem very interesting. Besides everyone needs more friends. No more lonely nights sitting around playing solitaire. Now I can play poker with my Shopping Buddy.

This is a very interesting (let alone odd) accessory. Have you ever questioned yourself saying: “Wow, I paid $400 for these trendy shades and all they do is give a false sense of importance and occasionally keep the sun out of my eyes… what a total rip off! Toshiba’s revolutionary helmet… sorta

The concept of this product had been announced last year already, but given the creativity behind the product I thought that this was a must-read (perhaps a must-laugh) for the CG readers.

Now before people start to get the wrong idea by looking at the picture “No, that girl is not wearing a Cathode-Ray-Tube television on her head”. Toshiba developed that helmet to allow users to experience a 360-degree view while watching television or playing video games.

The bulky helmet weights about 6 pounds, but people commented that this version is actually much smaller than previous prototypes…

It is an interesting idea (insert sarcasm here), however a few questions pop into my mind by looking at it:

1. Do the manufacturer includes oxygen cylinders for people to breath inside the device?
2. Will Toshiba sign a partnership with some insurance company to provide medical treatment for the neck injuries to come?
3. What if your old grandpa gets a heart attack by entering suddenly on a room where you are using the device, who are we to blame?

By the way, did you watch SpaceBalls?

R2-D2 Unit Has a Trash Can

I’m crazy about Star Wars, and one of my favourite characters is R2-D2, that little droid that plays a vital role in this great story. Now Think Geek is selling this incredibly detailed R2-D2 replica from Japan, which is not at all what it seems. This R2 unit doesn’t have any sounds or lights or special effects, but if you’re looking for a trashcan, this is one of the coolest I’ve ever seen. When you step in to his central “foot”, it swings the dome open to reveal a trash bin, making it the perfect companion to your office.

With the R2 wastebasket you’ll find that throwing things away can be also fun, just be careful not to dispose of anything important. The droid stands 24″ tall, and it costs US$ 149, which may be a little expensive for a trashcan, but is a small price to pay to get all your friends jealous. If you want one you can buy yours now from Think Geek, but hurry up, because this Star Wars R2-D2 Trash is a limited edition Japanese imported collectable and when it sells out there will be no replacement.

Islamic Gadgets

I know personally that many Muslims are feeling under siege, both mentally and physically, and believe they are getting a bad press. Relations between our two cultures seem to be deteriorating, so I hope I’m not trivialising events when I discuss this Quranic clock gadget: I’m trying to clear up a few myths and find some common ground.

The Taliban banned television, video and satellite shortly after seizing power in Afghanistan in 1996. The ban was probably academic as not many people had electricity after years of fighting between Afghan warlords, but it did perhaps reinforce for many who didn’t know better that Islam was a backward-looking religion – myself included at that time I have to say.

These days I think judging Islam as a religion by the behaviour of a fanatical cult like the Taliban is like trying to judge Christianity by people who don’t let their children have blood transfusions.

The Muslims I know are crazy about gadgets, buying mobiles with alarms to tell them when it’s time for prayers, and adding Quranic ring tones for example. Recently, when an Indian cleric reportedly called the use verses from the Quran as ring tones un-Islamic they were horrified that the view of another crank cleric was reported in the Western media as somehow being representative of mainstream Muslim opinion.

Anyway, I’m sure my friends would love this gadget. It’s a Quranic wristwatch with flash memory and an MP3 player. It comes with a USB port for transferring files and for re-charging. You can install the Quran as an MP3 file, taking up 70 MB of the available 256 MB memory. In fact, thinking about it I wouldn’t mind one myself.

Sunglasses,, that are so cool, they’ll eat your face,, Parasite

These are from the French design team at Parasite. They have a line of super cool sunglasses.

I’m sure however you could easily figure that out after looking at the images here.

Check out their site for a full look at all the lines they have. I’ve been wearing my pair of toasters for waay too long and I think it may be high time to trade out for a pair of these (then again, they’re probably a fortune, ahh, what the heck, I only have these two eyes).

The real advantage here is that they’ve developed their eyewear holding system in a way that makes every frame of theirs very unique as well as functional. It grips in two areas referred to as the fronto-parietal zone as the upper arm, and the temporal bone area as the lower arm.

The best thing about them, is they don’t just make sunglasses, but they do prescription frames as well. That of course means, once my eyes drop below 20/15, I’ll be picking up a pair of those too (umm, I don’t wanna know what that’s gonna cost!)

What’s this motion controls you talk about? Rumble feature? All those pale in comparison when it comes to the gaming controller of choice, especially when faced with Emotiv’s Project Epoc. This spunky start-up from Down Under has developed a brand new gaming peripheral that makes the world of video and computer games accessible to virtually anyone and everyone with a head. How is this possible, you ask? The answer is simple - this helmet like device is placed on top of your nogging, while a processing unit will interpret the information garnered from a series of detection suites that are located all over the helmet. It will be able to detect and measure the player’s discreet emotional states and conscious thoughts, eventually translating those signals into a command that controls your on-screen avatar.

The Project Epoc helmet, when fully functional, will be compatible with a whole slew of gaming platforms without discriminating against either console or computer. This means those who are disabled will be able to duke it out with current Masters of Mice on an even platform, and don’t be surprised if your friend in a wheelchair manages to trounce you over and over in Warcraft or Quake due to his/her superior cognitive ability that was enhanced after suffering from paralysis.

There is no word on when a commercial version will be available, but if you have some time, do scurry over to the Gamers’ Developer Conference in San Franciso as the Project Epoc helmet will be on display.

Harley Davidson TV Lantern Boombox

Harley Davidson may make some pretty decent bikes (well to pose on at least) but some how I don’t think this Harley Davidson TV Lantern Boombox is going to get quite as many admiring glances.

You can probably tell exactly what it comes with by the name and it does feature a CD player along with the tiny TV and lantern.

If you want to impress all your biker chums, I’m sure carrying this on your shoulder and wearing fake tattoo sleeves is a sure way to lose teeth test your running shoes.

Gold Necklace Earphones

Jewelry has always been an object of desire (though Gems TV are trying to change that). With iPods starting take over the role of most desirable item (people are getting mugged based on what headphones they sport) Stockholm jewelry designer Anna Tascha Larsson has come up with the idea of a gold plated iPod earphone necklace (so now you can get robbed for your jewelry and iPod).

If the earphones actually worked this could be a cool product but as they don’t it kind of reminds me of a charm bracelet for the neck, though I’m not renowned for my taste in fashion or Jewelry.

Personal Alarm Watch Helps the Hearing Impaired

Designer Nikita Golovlev has come up with an innovative idea for a watch that could be a real life saver. The Personal Alarm Watch will detect important events like fire alarms and alert the wearer by vibration and flashing lights.

How does it work?
The personal alarm watch is a concept product at the moment but it has been shrewdly thought about on how it could actually work, so far there are two solutions:

It could use an internal antenna to detect special signals given off by smoke detectors and fire alarms (this would require an expensive modification to appropriate alarm systems).
A microphone in the watch could monitor sound levels, if it detected a severe increase or heard a known danger sound again a warning could be issued
As product ideas go I think this is really great and Nikita Golovlev(found via the Product Design Forums) is certainly a designer to look out for in the future (thanks Nikita for the extra images).

I may be a bit late to the party on this, but I’ve just come across Sony’s new VGN-UX1XN Ultra portable PC. What can I say - I want one! It’s similar in concept to the oqo line, but Sony have upped the spec considerably.

For your £2000 ($4000 - yikes!) you get:

Instead of using LEDs luminous fabric uses fibre optics in the thread of the garment, this is said to lead to a more subtle and mysterious lighting, me I just think it looks cool. But now I can’t decide whether I want an luminous pillow or a bluetooth phone pillow.

This is a cool looking idea, the sand + time watch, an egg timer for your wrist.

The watch would function in two ways, the first as a conventional watch displaying the time (hours at the top, minutes at the bottom) but in the more interesting other mode the display will take on the form of an old fashioned egg timer and display the sand falling from the top screen to the bottom.

The Amazing Flying Dutch Car

f you hate being stuck in traffic jams, don’t worry, because the new flying car PAL-V is on it way. This Dutch project is a hybrid 3-wheel vehicle that can fly as a gyrocopter and also be driven as a regular car, or to be more precise, like a motorcycle.

When riding on the road, the PAL-V will use the patented technology Dynamic Vehicle Control (DVC™), originally designed for the Carver One, that should make tilting in corners a piece of cake. The flying apparatus is based on the original idea for the “autogiro”, developed in 1923 by Juan de la Cierva, and will have the capability to land practically anywhere. Combining the best of both worlds, the PAL-V ONE will use a foldable rotor fixed on the roof, a foldable propeller, and a slidable tail. The motor used for driving is the same that will power the propeller. The same controls are used in both flying and driving mode, but with different functionalities between them.
The PAL-V will fly only under 4,000 feet and will use a highly fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly engine that can run on petrol, but also on biodiesel or bio-ethanol. The vehicle will reach up to 200 km/h both on land an in the air.
Flying and riding with the PAL-V will be a breeze, and I can’t wait to get my hands on one of those.

Home consoles aren’t exactly the most conducive environment to play a first person shooter, no thanks to clunky controls despite having two analog sticks to thumb around with. Until today, there is no thing more natural to playing a FPS than using a keyboard and the mouse, but SplitFish GameWare aims to level the playing field by offering the patent pending FragFX controller which consists of a separate right hand mouse controller and a detachable left hand grip controller. Granted, this solution isn’t as comfortable as the computer’s setup, but at least it offers a greater degree of freedom to the discerning gamer and makes those of us who fumble with analog sticks smile.

Droid could enter healthcare workforce in future

A human-sized android was paraded in a public demonstration in the middle of last week in Tokyo, and it was proudly showing off its weightlifting skills to everybody by picking up a 30kg package from a desk as well as lifting a 66kg humanoid doll out of bed. I suppose this droid would definitely be a boon to nurses and healthcare providers worldwide, since plenty of patients these days are from the obese and overweight categories, leaving nurses no choice but to call for help when transporting these patients out of bed.

Professor Yasuo Kuniyoshi from the University of Tokyo is at the helm of this project, and his team of engineers were the ones who developed this 70kg robot that stands a proud 155cm tall. Recently, a software upgrade enabled it to move in a more human-like manner, courtesy of adjusting its arm movements based on data received from more than 1,800 tactile sensors embedded within its artificial skin. This sensor-based control system replaces older technology that uses large motors for a robot’s strength, enabling it to be used for household tasks safely.

The droid is capable of performing different maneuvers for various situations, using one arm to slide a 30kg package to the edge of a desktop and using the other arm to pick it up. When removing the 66kg dummy, it slid both arms under the body, applied a little pressure to lift it slightly, and backed away in a manner any normal human being would. All this and not a drop of sweat, although it would be mandatory to oil its parts once in a while. Professor Kuniyoshi has dreams that this robot’s ability will land it a job in the nursing care or moving industries sometime in the future.

Hand machined from aircraft aluminium and finished with military grade hard coat anodising, the 12cm long Inova X5 is virtually indestructible. In fact, it is crush proof to 2000+ kg and waterproof to over 50 metres.

With five 110,000 hour life ultra-bright Inova LED lamps recessed into a patented stainless steel head heat sink, skilled machinists precisely drill and flare each of the five distinct projector holes to maximize beam projection range.

Finally, to lock in the Constant Off mode, simply twist the switch cap another one-half counter clockwise revolution.

The switch-cap is ringed by a tactile knurling, and a 18mm lanyard hole has been individually drilled and chamfered (hand rounded) to minimize the possibility of wear and tearing of a cloth or plastic lanyard cord (the hole accommodates 550 parachute cord).

Asus Aura, produced by Hungarian design company Egy Studio for Taiwanese vendor. It was clearly inspired by iPhone, although it has some interesting innovations addressing commonly mentioned shortcomings of Apple's cellphone. Features of Asus Aura include - a sliding QWERTY keyboard that should make text entry much easier, 3,9″ touchscreen covering the whole surface of the phone, 2 megapixel camera, microSD memory card slot, GSM, UMTS, HSDPA, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. All of this in a 6mm thick package.

Dual-Screened Nokia E90 Communicator Sees the Light of Day

The Nokia E90 Communicator has come out of the blurry shadows and into the sharp spotlight, showing off its 3.2 megapixel camera, Edge, WiFi and HDSPA goodness on two screens, one inside and the other out. That outside screen is a conventional 240x320 while inside it's packing an expansive 800x352 screen that can show you an entire width of a web page, no sweat.

If that's not enough, Nokia crammed even more stuff inside, including GPS with Nokia maps and an FM radio. For all that power and goodness, you're going to have to shell out some relatively big bucks—it'll set you back about $1000 without a contract, first available in Q2 of this year.

BlueGene/L—first on the Linpack TOP500 list of supercomputers with a sustained world-record speed of 280.6 teraFLOPS—is a revolutionary, low-cost machine delivering extraordinary computing power for the nation's Stockpile Stewardship Program.

Located in the Terascale Simulation Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, BlueGene/L is used by scientists at Livermore, Los Alamos, and Sandia National Laboratories. The 360-teraFLOPS machine handles many challenging scientific simulations, including ab initio molecular dynamics; three-dimensional (3D) dislocation dynamics; and turbulence, shock, and instability phenomena in hydrodynamics. It is also a computational science research machine for evaluating advanced computer architectures.

Developed by the IBM Watson Research Center in partnership with many, BlueGene/L is scaled up with a few unique components and IBM's system-on-a-chip technology developed for the embedded microprocessor marketplace. The computer's nodes are interconnected in three different ways instead of the usual one. Server that Changed the World(Google’s Very First Server)

The Sun Ultra 2 may seem like an unlikely candidate to make this list, but it steps up as the server which first hosted Larry Page and Sergey Brin’s Backrub search engine – which, of course, eventually evolved into Google.
In 1998, Backrub was hosted on a Sun Ultra 2 with dual 200Mhz CPUs and 256MB of RAM at Stanford University. The famous image of the computer case partially made up of legos (pictured) isn’t actually the Backrub server, but rather its enclosure for external storage. (There were also a couple of Intel Servers and an IBM RS/6000 F50 in their network.)
This is quite a humble beginning, considering there are now over 450,000 servers in Google’s datacenters around the world. The simplicity of its search engine and its relative results blew away their competitors. (And it all started on an Ultra 2.)
